The only other new buildings which

are to be commenced in the coming year are quarters for

signalmen at Green Island ($4,600), rendered necessary by

complaints of the unsuitability of the existing matshed

accommodation, a mortuary at Kowloon ($8,000) and shelters

for dust carts ($5,000) recommended by the Sanitary Autho-

-rities. These are minor buildings with regard to which I

need not trouble you with details.

In the matter of communications,

I have already indicated to you the manner in which it is

proposed to expend the aggregate sum of $100,000 allotted

to Survey and Preliminary Work for the Railway to Canton

and to new roads in the New Territories. The extension

East and West of the Conduit Road has been urged on me as

giving better means of communication for some existing

buildings and as opening up valuable sites for new build-

-ings on the highest level of the City of Victoria. Plans

showing the course of the road accompanies this Despatch.

The provision in the Estimates for extending Robinson Road

($30,000) is for continuing to the North the work referred

to in paragraph 7 of my Despatch No. 346 dated 20th. Sep-
